THE CITY
Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras, is one of the world’s oldest living cities, situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges. Revered as the city of Lord Vishwanath, it is renowned for its timeless temples, historic ghats, and deep spiritual ambience. Mark Twain famously described Banaras as “older than history, older than tradition, even older than legend”.
For centuries, Varanasi has been a major center of Indian learning, philosophy, classical music, and silk weaving, inspiring many of the country’s most celebrated artists and scholars. The iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, located in the heart of the city, stands as a powerful symbol of India’s living spiritual heritage.
Among the city’s major attractions is Sarnath, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon, along with Bharat Mata Mandir, Swarved Mandir, Ramnagar Fort, Bharat Kala Bhavan, the Birla Temple, and the Banaras Hindu University campus itself. A morning boat ride along the Ganges, passing the city’s many historic ghats, is a memorable experience for visitors.
Varanasi also serves as a convenient gateway to other important heritage destinations such as Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Khajuraho, and Agra, all well connected by air and rail.
With its unique blend of spirituality, history, art, and living traditions, Varanasi offers an inspiring and unforgettable setting for an international academic conference.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
Varanasi is well connected to major cities across India by air, rail, and road. Regular domestic flights operate to and from Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata (some routes may involve a layover in Delhi). All three cities are international airports; international participants are therefore required to take a domestic flight to reach Varanasi.
Varanasi Junction (BSB) lies approximately midway between Delhi and Kolkata and is served by several convenient overnight trains with sleeper and air-conditioned coaches. Two other nearby railway stations are Banaras Junction (BSBS) (approximately 5 km from the BHU campus) and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU) (approximately 20 km from the campus). These stations are also at comparable distances from the main city area.
Please note that Varanasi occasionally experiences dense fog, particularly during winter mornings, which may cause delays to flights and trains. Train tickets and berths must be reserved in advance (up to two months prior to the date of travel). Reservations can be made online through the official Indian Railways website: https://www.indianrail.gov.in/. Passengers booking online are required to carry a valid photo identity card while traveling.
Early Booking for International Travel
Participants are strongly advised to finalize international travel plans at least six months in advance to secure confirmed seats at reasonable fares. The months of December and January attract a large number of international tourists to India, and last-minute bookings may result in limited availability or inconvenient flight schedules.
For any specific travel-related queries or assistance, participants are encouraged to contact the conference organizers.
